About A New Beginning: Pastoral Counseling

Two thousand years ago when Jesus walked on the earth He was in the business of changing lives! Jesus wasn’t afraid or put off by people’s problems, struggles and/or needs. Whether body, soul or spirit, Jesus cared for those who looked to Him for help and He brought freedom, life and wholeness wherever He went setting captives free.

At A New Beginning: Pastoral Counseling we don’t believe much has changed! Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and He is still passionate about bringing healing, freedom and wholeness to those who look to Him for help. He is still the Prince of Peace.

Jesus may not be here on earth physically right now, but He has anointed His people, His hand’s and feet, via His Holy Spirit to fulfill the same commission: To proclaim the Kingdom of God, heal the sick and cast out demons.

Our Mission

A New Beginning: Pastoral Counseling, LLC exists to seek to bring the heart of God to the heart of man so that true transformation can take place in individuals and families. Helping them embark on a new beginning of healing, restoration, and an intimate relationship (not just a religion) with Jesus Christ. Thus enabling the individual and/or family to know Him, Jesus, in a deeper way and begin to fulfill the plan that God has for them; by Him, through Him, in Him and for Him.

Our Vision

A New Beginning: Pastoral Counseling, LLC is an international non-denominational Christian counseling ministry with a vision to resource and equip the body of Christ by welcoming people, teaching them about the Kingdom of God, healing those in need and assisting in the transformation of their minds by the renewing of it.

We seek to do this in accordance with the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. To work alongside and in unity with the Body of Christ worldwide, fulfilling the call of the church to proclaim the Kingdom of God by preaching/teaching the good news, healing the brokenhearted and setting the captives free. We are, therefore, are committed to evangelism, healing, deliverance, and discipleship starting right here in Greenville SC.

Who We Are & What We Do

The sad truth is that many people feel that there is no real answer to the problems they face on a daily basis – problems such as fear and anxiety, addictions, anger outbursts, sexual issues, long-term consequences of trauma, abuse and relationship dysfunction… to name but a few. The list is endless! The wonderful fact, however, is that God is willing, able and wants to restore His people and equip them to fulfill all the plans He has for them! No man, woman nor child is excluded and our goal is to see thousands of lives healed, transformed and set free. We are a light pointing people to the The Light; Jesus Christ.

The first foundational scripture for the ministry is Luke 9:11,” But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.” Here Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those who were in need.

The second foundational scriptures for the our ministry is Romans 12:1-2 , “ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

These elements from the above scriptures make up the vision of A New Beginning: Pastoral Counseling, LLC- welcoming people, teaching them about life in the Kingdom of God, ministering God’s healing to their lives, and assisting in the the transformation of their minds by the renewing of it. That is our vision.

What We Mean By The Word "Healing"

Have you noticed that we are living in increasingly dark days where so many of us are turning away from the Lord and are following our own paths? The brokenness in people’s lives is increasing and the cries from many hearts is for God to bring restoration and healing. Read more...

Our definition of healing is simple. We believe healing is God’s supernatural work of bringing order into a person’s life where there has been disorder!  It includes looking at the root problem(s) that may be the cause of a person’s struggle – dealing with that,  building from there and  transforming the mind by the renewing of it. Sometimes this includes disassembling faulty belief systems and application(s), or lack of,  and then rebuilding. As we help an individual(s) or families to do their part, we pray for the Lord to bring His healing. Full and complete change of a human being is an act of God via the power of God (indwelling Holy Spirit) with the person doing his or her part.  This is a process leading to freedom which can be liberating.   Our biblical counseling process may include our deliverance ministry and/or temperament counseling.  Sometimes it involves both depending on the client’s  situation.   It’s not the weird or wacky picture of healing that some people have – just biblical discipleship.

Creation Therapy/ Temperament Counseling

Part of our totally confidential counseling approach is based on Creation Therapy/temperament counseling which is a Biblical based therapy. This approach was developed by Dr’s Richard and Phyllis Arno and has a success rate over 90%. It is based on the theory of temperament, which is the understanding of the inner man, and uses this knowledge to help us understand ourselves. Read more...

It allows us to be the best that God has created us to be by meeting the needs of our temperament equally and scripturally.  The theory of temperament teaches that our temperament is placed within us by God, while in our mother’s womb, and that this temperament will remain with us throughout our lives. We are spiritual beings created by God with a precise order and balance of spirit, soul and body. Temperament pinpoints our perception of ourselves and the people who love us. It is also the determining factor in how well we handle the stresses and pressures of life. Temperament can best be defined as Spiritual genetics or God’s imprint upon each one of us.

We typically have counselees perform a temperament analysis by completing a questionnaire called the Arno Profile System (A.P.S.) This questionnaire will enable us to generate a clinical report that we utilize in counseling.  We all have physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The goal of the A.P.S. profile is to help you, and loved ones where applicable, understand your individual strengths, weaknesses, and your needs. We will look at how you may be trying to meet those needs.  Sometimes we attempt to meet these emotional needs in ungodly (worldly)  ways which can lead to emotional/behavioral issues causing intrapersonal  and/or interpersonal stress.

Through identification of the individual’s temperament needs and teaching that individual “how to” meet these needs in Godly ways we are teaching that individual to develop his/her spirit. This is accomplished through Creation Therapy/ temperament counseling which is a step-by-step therapeutic format based on the Word of God.

Deliverance Ministry

Another part of our approach is deliverance ministry. A large part of our counseling ministry is on spiritual warfare and teaching our client(s) how to wage this more effectively and sometimes deliverance is needed. Deliverance is one of multiple elements that make up spiritual warfare. Read more...

A simple definition of deliverance is the driving out of demons thus creating more room in the counselee’s soul (mind, will and emotions) allowing them to win the mind battles. If not dealt with in the soulish realm they can torment our physical body as well. Demonic oppression can be released into the saints of God to keep them from His calling and hindering believer’s testimony-note we said demonic oppression not possession. We do not feel that a born again follower of Christ can be demonically possessed. Demonic oppression is very real and very active, especially in the day and age we live in.

A demonic stronghold is an area of the counselee’s life where the counselee can’t get any victory. These are typically areas that pain our lives and do not line up with Word of God. These may be but not limited to addictions, anger, fear, depression, pornography, lust, sexual perversions, etc… Many times the client may say, “this just isn’t me” or  “I don’t know what comes over me”. Rage is a perfect example of this but there are so many others. These demonic strongholds can be uncontrollable lust of any kind and not just sexual; Lust for attention, approval, being needed, power, money, etc.. Yes, we all may have these emotions at one time or another but we are dealing with strongholds that can not broken on our own. Most of our stories are unique but the devil is not. Most of the time this torment starts with insecurity, rejection, abandonment, and then alienation which is where the enemy  wants us. Many believers go through life in management mode just coping or coexisting with demonic strongholds when Jesus Christ came so we can have life and have it more abundantly-  “in Him”. We do not push people into this, the counselee must want it and be ready. There is nothing theatrical about this. Simply exercising the power and authority that Jesus Christ has given believers. Are you walking in freedom or are you in bondage?

This, being set free,  can be a huge event and part of what we do is teach the counselee how to stay free, walk it out, abiding in Him and Him abiding in the client. Spiritual fruit should start being evident in the person’s life at this point.

Spiritual discernment is a necessity here because not every emotional and/or behavioral issue is  demonic. Many times it is the flesh or the “old man” as Paul says  and we must know the difference. If there is any demonization in the counelee’s life this must be dealt with before moving into counseling and this is typically discerned in our interview process. Again this must be addressed up front. The flesh can not be cast out nor can demons be counseled.

What Sets Us Apart

Several things set us apart. First and foremost this is Biblical counseling that is highly specialized being offered by an Ordained Minister of Pastoral care. What we mean is that we do not just offer Christian counseling, temperament counseling, and/or deliverance ministry. We are trained in and offer all three. Read more...

There are many Christian counselors out there.  There are some deliverance ministries as well and there are some Christian counseling centers who utilize temperament counseling. Most of these do one of the above.  We actually combine all of these under one ministry and apply each one where applicable depending on the individual(s) and/or family’s needs.

Derek, our Pastoral counselor,  was raised in an extremely dysfunctional home and witnessed many traumatic things  including  the premature deaths of his brother, mother and father.  Derek battled his own demons for sometime too.  Derek has a good bit of experiential knowledge with pains of life in addition to clinical and biblical knowledge.  He has been there.  Derek wasn’t always in the ministry and had a very colorful life before totally surrendering to The Lord Jesus Christ, being delivered, and answering the Lord’s call put upon his life.  Thus generating a passion and strong desire to help individuals and families understand and apply the freedom we have in Christ.  There are not too many things that are presented to us,  ANBPC,  that we haven’t had some exposure.

Our Approach

We often say at A New Beginning: Pastoral Counseling, LLC that we utilize an “inside out” approach. Meaning that healing and life transformation has to start in the heart. This is a gracious act of God through Christ Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Read more...
Changed lives begin with changed hearts. So we address the heart first, then the head, then the hands, and then the habits. In other words; spirit, soul, and body. Again, we are a light pointing people to the The Light, Jesus Christ. He is still the Wonderful Counselor, Ultimate Physician and The Prince of Peace.

Read Derek's Story
As many of us do, I experienced a “rough patch” in life and found it was soon getting rougher and rougher. I grew up in an extremely dysfunctional home. My oldest brother took his life after battling with mental issues and addictions and I soon lost my mother and father in a similar manner due to many of the same demons. I lost my first cousin around this same time who had a tremendous affect on me. I lost several small fortunes, homes, businesses, money, etc. I was soon battling my own demons too. My wife was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer after our 3rd son was born. After seeking counseling myself I went from bad to worse with secular counseling and medications. Once I was totally broken and totally surrendered in walks God. (James 4:7)

I was soon introduced to quality biblical counseling from trained Pastoral counselors. This also included temperament counseling and deliverance ministry. So many things were shown to me via the counselors, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. I had and have a thirst for His Word that is unquenchable, thank God. The Lord blessed us, my family, showing His healing Power. In addition to this, once I understood temperament (how God wired us) I soon understood why I did some of the things that I did. We all have needs and how we try to feel these needs-Godly or ungodly, can have a tremendous impact on our quality of life or lack of. God healed my family and I so we could help Him heal other families.

I do realize that it only takes one generation. Meaning I do want to bring healing to people, via Jesus Christ, but my main concern are the “least of these”-the children. And what mom and dad do or don’t do has overarching and lifelong effect on this next generation and following.

No matter what you are battling Jesus Christ can heal you and set you free and he who The Son sets free is free indeed. Call or email me today and let’s talk.

By Him, through Him, in Him and for Him.
